Contingency Planning at Little Gonerby

At Little Gonerby School our primary concern is the safety and wellbeing of our children, staff and school community. We recognise that a school closure will impact differently on all of us and we acknowledge that children and families will face a variety of situations and challenges. With this in mind we will do all we can to keep school open for all, but have robust contingency plans in place to ensure minimal disruption to children's learning should school ever need to close.

 

During the coronavirus pandemic, we will follow the guidance and instruction from the DfE, Public Health England and local authority closely. The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has a framework of four 'tiers of intervention' for education settings when managing local outbreaks and implementing restrictions - Little Gonerby School anticipates that a closure would only be required  if we reach Tier 4, meaning national government intervention. (exception being if insufficient staff are available or if we are instructed to close a bubble due to a positive case) At Tier 4, school will remain open for children of key workers and vulnerable families including children with EHCPs, with all other children accessing remote learning. 

 

Home Learning

Our aim is to keep our core purpose of teaching and learning continuing as effectively as possible. During a school closure each child will be provided with learning to do at home and we expect, wherever possible, that all children will complete all the work set. However, we do recognise that the level of work that might be undertaken by a child will reflect the situation and circumstances at home. We will do all we can to support any families experiencing challenges.

 

We use the online learning platform Google Classroom to set and respond to work. Should the school need to close or partially close, each child will be provided with their own log in details to access their Google Classroom account, along with instructions for parents and a book and equipment for paper based activities. We are making contact with all families this term to establish where any children do not have access to the internet or a suitable device to complete online learning, and to provide alternatives if needed.

 

Every day, there will be a minimum of a phonics activity, a writing activity, a maths activity and some reading as a core. In addition, over the week there will be a variety of activities linked to the children's project that term. Teachers will aim to follow their planning for the term as closely as possible, adapting for the different resources available in the home, and will share a weekly suggested timetable as we know that parents say this is helpful to give some structure to the day. Teachers may also use relevant lessons and activities from the Oak National Academy and other online platforms. Google Classroom allows children to complete work in a variety of ways and we try to avoid setting all activities to be completed online - for example we want the children to continue to practise their handwriting so may ask for writing activities to be completed on paper and then ask children/parents to take a photo of the work on their phone and upload it to their Classroom account. This also allows teachers to respond and give feedback to each child.
